If someone opened your closet, what would fall out? Clothes? Spots equipment? Skeletons? There was a specific skeleton in Israel's past that was causing issues in the present. When David saught the Lord about it, David got a clear answer and took action. We too may have bones in our past or from our ancestors that are causing a ripple effect today. When you properly bury the bones, issues get resolved.
