Most of us like taking shortcuts. Google Maps (or Maps for those Apple users) tries to find the quickest, easister way for us to get to our destination. When we do that in our own lives, short cuts often lead us down a road with a dead end or bad detour. That's what happens when we choose our own way. God's way is often harder, longer, and leads takes a high road that requires more energy and effort. David had to make several decision like these in his life. Not killing Saul was one of these times. And David going God's way shows us how we can make those choices too.
