You would think that everything going our way would produce the growth we'd expect. Not necessary with God. We find in David's life that a lot didn't go his way, and that much of it went really bad. However, God designed David's path to include suffering that produced the necessary character, relationship with God and future to prepare him to be king. If this happened to David, we can expect a similar path for ourselves.
